Our Favorite Intern in the Department of Mayhem

Every attempt at a selfie with Pepper turns into a face-licking ambush.

I firmly believe that every dog comes into your life to bring exactly what you need at that moment. Apparently, last October, when I adopted Pepper, I really needed chaos, a challenge, fewer material possessions… and a whole lot more humility.

Pepper is everything you want in a dog: entertaining, adorable, responsive, smart, energetic, funny, loving, and cuddly. But she’s also completely, gloriously insane. She gets so excited to go for walks that it can take several long minutes just to get the leash on her. Over the past year, she’s destroyed so many of my belongings. Her early obsessions included remote controls, AirPods, and books; lately, socks and nightgowns are her go-to. And no food is safe — she’s a counter-surfing pro, happily absconding with cherry tomatoes, whole heads of broccoli, and sometimes even cookies or peanut butter tubs.

Brains are optional when you're this cute.

Pepper loves to cuddle...whether Scout likes it or not.

She’s terrified of many things — crowds, loud noises, new places, big trucks — but once she’s comfortable, she turns into a jumping bean. She loves nothing better than to jump up and lick the faces of her favorite people, and none of my usual training tricks can stop it.

While she technically doesn't have the job experience required for a permanent position, we decided to bring Pepper on as an intern at Dog People because she’s such an inspiration for our dog merch. Our Wanted Poster designs are a perfect example — her crimes are so numerous that I could fill my cupboards with Pepper’s Wanted Poster coffee mugs and still not capture all her transgressions.

With my two drama queens — Scout and Pepper — around, there are endless dog kisses, play barks, and minor (or major) dog spats. Enough to keep this new business owner inspired for years to come.

See you Friday!

— Liz

P.S. Can your dog rival Pepper for mischief or just plain cuteness? Create a custom Wanted Poster featuring your own pup — mugs, totes, posters, and wine tumblers that celebrate your dog’s antics in style.

P.P.S. Is your pup ready to be internet famous? (We know the answer is yes!). Tell us all about your dog, and we'll feature them as Dog of the Week!
